This Istanbul guided tour from port is one of our most popular experiences. Step off your cruise ship and straight into one of the world’s most impressive cities with our expertly guided bosphorus tour experience, starting right at Istanbul Port. Whether you’ve got a few precious hours or a full day ashore, we make sure every single minute counts. This isn’t just a sightseeing tick-list — it’s a genuine, immersive journey through a city that has been the crossroads of civilizations for thousands of years. And who better to show you around than people who call Istanbul home?
Cruise passengers face a unique challenge: incredible history, culture, and flavor packed into a city this vast — and only a limited window to experience it. That’s exactly why our shore excursion tour is tailored specifically for you. We meet you directly at the port, no confusion, no waiting around, no wasted time navigating an unfamiliar transit system. From the moment you step off the gangway, you’re in good hands.
Istanbul isn’t a city you can truly understand from a bus window. Our guides walk you through its layered streets, share stories that don’t make it into guidebooks, and give you real context for what you’re seeing. This is the difference between visiting Istanbul and feeling Istanbul.
Your journey begins at the legendary Hagia Sophia, and trust us — no photograph prepares you for the moment you step inside. Built in 537 AD under Emperor Justinian, this extraordinary structure has served as a Byzantine cathedral, an Ottoman mosque, a museum, and once again a mosque today. The sheer scale of the central dome, the golden mosaics still glimmering after fifteen centuries, the hushed reverence of the space — it’s genuinely moving. Your guide will walk you through what makes this building one of the true architectural miracles of human history.
Practical tip: Hagia Sophia is closed on Mondays. If your visit falls on a Monday, we’ll take you instead to the atmospheric underground Basilica Cistern, where ancient columns rise from dark, shallow water and the two Medusa heads wait quietly in the shadows. It’s honestly an equally memorable experience.
A short walk from Hagia Sophia brings you to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, better known as the Blue Mosque — and once you see the interior, you’ll understand the name immediately. More than 20,000 hand-painted İznik tiles in varying shades of blue and turquoise line the walls, catching the light from 260 windows in a way that feels almost otherworldly. Outside, the six slender minarets frame the sky in a silhouette that has defined Istanbul’s horizon for over four centuries. Your guide will share the fascinating story behind those six minarets — a detail that caused quite a controversy when this mosque was first built.
Right next door lies the Hippodrome Square, the ancient heart of Byzantine public life. Once a thundering arena for chariot races capable of holding 100,000 spectators, it now stands as an open plaza holding some of Istanbul’s oldest monuments side by side. The Egyptian Obelisk was carved over 3,500 years ago and brought here from Karnak. The Serpentine Column came from the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. These aren’t replicas — they are the real things, sitting quietly in the open air while the city moves around them. Your guide will paint a vivid picture of what this space once looked like, filled with roaring crowds and fierce competition.
No visit to Istanbul is complete without losing yourself (just a little) in the Grand Bazaar. With over 4,000 shops spread across 60 covered streets, this is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world — and it’s as alive and chaotic and wonderful today as it was in the 15th century. Spices, ceramics, carpets, jewelry, leather goods, lanterns that glow in every color — it’s a full sensory experience. Your guide will help you navigate the maze, point out the best spots, and maybe even teach you a thing or two about the gentle art of bargaining.
Good to know: The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays. On those days, we’ll explore the equally charming Nuruosmaniye Street or the quieter but beautiful Arasta Bazaar just behind the Blue Mosque — a more relaxed shopping experience with equally wonderful finds.
As part of your time in Istanbul, you’ll have the opportunity to see the legendary Bosphorus Strait that splits this city between two continents. Whether you’re viewing it from the historic hills of Sultanahmet or extending your visit with a dedicated Bosphorus cruise, the sight of this shimmering waterway — with tankers, ferries, and fishing boats all sharing the same ancient channel — is something that stays with you long after your ship has sailed. An Istanbul Bosphorus tour by water gives you a completely different perspective on the city, with iconic landmarks like the Dolmabahçe Palace, the Rumeli Fortress, and the elegant suspension bridges all visible from the water. If you’d like to add a Bosphorus cruise to your shore excursion, just let us know — we’ll make it happen.
We understand that every traveler is different. Maybe you’ve already visited Hagia Sophia on a previous trip, or perhaps there’s a specific neighborhood — Balat, Karaköy, Ortaköy — that you’ve always wanted to explore. Just tell us. Our local guides will craft a custom itinerary built around your interests and the time you have available. No cookie-cutter programs here. If you’re not sure where to start, share your interests and let our team suggest the perfect route for you.

We are meeting you at the port where you will have a stop during your cruise excursion. On this tour, we are taking you to the top highlights of Istanbul city in your limited waiting time.
Our first stop is the glorious Hagia Sophia, which is one of the main attractions of Istanbul. Located in the heart of the city, here we will witness one of the most accomplished architectural landmarks that have survived until this date from the Byzantine period. Here is a quick warning: Hagia Sophia is closed on Mondays; therefore if your tour is on Monday we will visit Basilica Cistern instead.
After Hagia Sophia, we are moving to the Blue Mosque that is also known as the mosque with six minarets. While discovering the amazing interiors and outdoors, we will be mesmerized by the blue İznik tiles, colored windows, and the heavenly marble work.
Continuing to the Hippodrome Square, where the chariot races took place in the Byzantine period, we will have the chance to see the exceptional Serpentine Column and the famous Egyptian Obelisk. With our professional guide, we will hear interesting stories about the history of Istanbul.
Last but not least, we are heading to one of the largest and oldest covered markets of the world: The Grand Bazaar. With 60 shopping streets and hundreds of traditional shops, there is so much to explore in the Grand Bazaar. We can buy some souvenirs from local shops and exercise our bargaining skills here.
Please note: The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays; so in case your tour takes place on Sunday, we will have some free time in Nuruosmaniye Street or in Arasta Bazaar.
We are meticulously arranging your tour in accordance with your waiting time at the port. Your return time to the port is scheduled in order for you to easily rejoin your cruise. The tour times are based on the local time; not on ship time.
Once you disembark from your cruise ship, you should enter the terminal building and walk straight. You will meet your guide there and he will take you to your air-conditioned transportation.
We highly recommend you carry sunscreen, a hat, and water with you during the tour. Wearing comfortable shoes for this excursion would be a plus, as it involves some walking with inclines and steps.
The local currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira; however, payment with Euro, British pound, and American dollars are also accepted by the locals.
It is forbidden to wear shoes inside the mosque; hence you will be asked to remove your shoes while walking inside the mosque. Inside the mosque, men were recommended to wear long trousers and sleeved shirts, while women were recommended to wear slacks, below-knee dresses or skirts, and elbow-length or longer shirts. For their hair, women can wear scarfs. If you do not have suitable clothing the attendants at the entrance will be assisting you free of charge.
