The number one question we get in October is a version of the same thing: “It is supposed to rain tonight — will the cruise still run?” The honest answer, nine times out of ten, is yes. Here is what you need to know for an autumn day on the Bosphorus — our full daily schedule, the policy on refunds and rebooks, what to pack, and the one weather pattern that does actually stop us.

Daily Bosphorus cruise schedule (October–November)

  • Morning cruise — board 10:00, return 11:30. Lower Bosphorus, two bridges, both shores.
  • Afternoon cruise — board 14:00, return 15:30. Same route, warmer light in autumn.
  • Sunset cruise — board 16:30 in late October (sunset is around 17:15). Returns 18:00.
  • Private departures — any time of day, pier of your choice, group only.

All departures include a guided audio feed in English, hot drinks on the open deck, and a heated covered saloon if the weather turns. On rainy days we still run every slot above unless we have a storm warning.

What counts as “too much weather” to sail

Rain alone does not stop a Bosphorus cruise. What stops us is one of three things:

  1. Storm-force wind. The Bosphorus funnels wind; above about 35 knots we do not sail. Rare in October, more common from late November.
  2. Lightning. If an active electrical storm is in the forecast for your window, we delay or cancel.
  3. Visibility below safe. Fog, which happens maybe five mornings in autumn, can push the morning cruise back an hour or two.

Steady rain, drizzle, light wind, and overcast sky are all a go. We have been operating in autumn for years and these conditions are our normal.

Refund and rebook policy on bad weather

You do not take the weather risk. If we cancel for any of the three reasons above, you choose:

  • Rebook to the next available slot at no extra charge, or
  • Full refund to your original payment method within 3 business days.

If you cancel because of rain but we are still sailing, we still move the booking to another date for free up to 4 hours before departure. We would rather have you with us tomorrow than argue tonight.

What to pack for a rainy Bosphorus cruise

  • A light water-resistant jacket. Not a plastic poncho — a real jacket you would walk the city in.
  • Closed shoes with grip. The deck is safe but a rubber sole helps on wet teak.
  • Layers. The saloon is warm, the open deck is cool.
  • A scarf or small hat. Autumn evening wind on the water drops a few degrees once the sun goes.
  • Lens cloth if you are serious about photos. Salt-mist is the enemy, not rain.

Which cruise to pick on a rainy day

Our regulars have a strong view on this. The sunset cruise is best in autumn rain — the lights come on earlier, the palaces reflect on the wet water, and the strait is almost empty. The morning cruise is better on bright autumn mornings when the hills on the Asian side look sharp against the clear light. The afternoon is a safe bet either way. If you want the most dramatic photos of the trip, book sunset.

One honest note on autumn Bosphorus

Late October to mid-December is a quietly beautiful stretch on this strait. The water holds its summer warmth, the city lights come on earlier, the summer crowds have gone home, and prices soften from their August peak. If your trip has any flexibility at all, this is the window we would pick ourselves.
